Radio Scilly airs local sports reports as part of our regular news and information broadcasts. Sports and community events in Scilly are often organised together. The October 10K, The August Sports and Music Festival on The Garrison and the Tresco Marathon in April and the Hash House Harrier runs are good examples of this. We don't segregate local sports stories from the news, as you would find on mainland radio stations as our sports stories have widespread community appeal. In the last year we've featured a number of interviews and features on the St Mary's Football Club, the world's smallest football league. the Woolpack Wanderers and the Garrison Gunners play each other every Sunday. The Five Islands School Football Club has formed a partnership with Plymouth Argyll with many youngsters travelling to the mainland for training. We have featured their successes regularly. Youngsters from the school regularly travel to the mainland and even overseas to places like Gibraltar. We keep islanders up to date with their fixtures and successes. The School P.E teacher, Martin Songhurst, has been recognised for his dedication in a national award arranged by The Daily Telegraph. The islands has a popular Judo Club. We feature their news and successes. The youngsters have performed very well in the Cornish County Championships. In 2008, the club almost folded when only a few people turned out for the AGM. There weren't enough attendees to form a committee. Radio Scilly was contacted by Dawn Bradford who wanted people to turn out to form a committee and save the club. 40 people then turned up at a rescheduled meeting after we warned that the club could close. That means the 40 or so youngsters can enjoy their Judo again! Rugby isn't so popular as a participation sport, but we do broadcast occasional pieces with visiting coaches from Cornwall, the Cornish Pirates and local coach Ben Kirk. Women's rugby is growing in popularity and is played in winter on the Garrison on Wednesday nights. Katie Graham lets us know about fixtures so we can tell the islands. We also keep you up-to-date with the success of our islands' champion weightlifter, Marian Gibson and Steve Douglas' Golfing achievements. Our regular sports broadcasting also include Gig news. That's a specialist topic of its own and that's why we have a specific section of our website (click here) and an hour long gig show that airs between 5 and 6pm on Mondays. Radio Scilly airs a sports discussion show between 5 and 6pm on a Friday with brothers Tim and Will Garratt. Tim was one of the Scilly Boys who attempted to row across the Atlantic in 2008. National Sports News: We broadcast UK and World sports from Independent Radio News just before 8am and 9am and around 16.45 pm on Weekdays. |
