The plans to build an observatory on St. Martins have taken a massive step in the right direction after a £59,000 government grant was awarded.

It's hoped the observatory could open this Autumn.

The group behind the initiative, COSMOS (Community Observatory St. Martins On Scilly) have already been granted planning permission for the site on St Martin's from the Duchy of Cornwall.

COSMOS still need to raise around £20,000, but the group are very confident the observatory will open this year, and play a vital role in developing the tourism industry on Scilly.

The islands have remarkable dark skies - some of the darkest in the UK.

Will was recently joined on the phone by Val Thomas from COSMOS to find out more.
