Mike and Emily have been coaching basketball to students from the Five Islands School on St Mary's.

Students in Scilly spent an afternoon this week being coached by top basketball coaches from the United States.

Zoe was joined in the studio on Friday Morning by Mike May and his daughter Emily who have come over to Scilly all the way from West Palm Beach in Florida.

Mike's connection to islands' goes back to his late farther Christopher who spent a considerable amount of time in Penzance, even playing rugby for the Pirates in the 1950's and was friends with local resident Barnsley Ward. The families have kept in touch, and have been friends ever since. Mike first came over to Scilly as a boy in 1968.

Mike is a High School basketball teacher and Emily currently plays at College level and is going into coaching next year.

Mike's said "We've had this lifelong interest in basketball and I thought I might be a good idea for the 3 day's we've here to give back to the community that has given me so much.  I thought basketball would be a great way to spread a global message and it was well received."

Originally the workshop was scheduled to be a 90 minute session but due to popular demand it turned into a 2, 1 hour long sessions. Even at the end of that the children wanted additional tuition which lasted another hour and only ended when they were told they had to stop!

Around 60 children attended the sessions and Mike and Emily are already talking about the possibility of coming over to Scilly again next year.

Thanks again to Mike and Emily for speaking to us and you can hear more on this story with Zoe below.
