Liz Askins Isles of Scilly Wildflower Of The Week was Spotted Medick - Medicago Arabica.
Spotted medick is found on all the inhabited islands. This is another tricky plant to ID, with lots of similar small yellow pea flowered plants.
The botanical name, Medicago arabica, has an awful lot of information attached to Medicago and very little to arabica which presumably refers to its origin, which is native to the Mediterranean region. Medicago is a large group of plants and refers to a country called Media where a very important fodder plant called alfalfa or lucerne came from.
This lowland plant has been introduced to America and Australia. It is now found throughout the world.
