The 2016 Scilly Swim Challenge gets underway tomorrow. This will be the 3rd Scilly Swim Challenge and it’s expanding this year with a one-day challenge, taking place tomorrow and a two-day challenge taking place on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th of September.
As well as the Swim Challenge Dewi Winkle the Co-founder and Co-organiser described the event as a “Festival of Sport” on the Islands.
As well as the swim challenges there are Island walks, moonlight swims and a whole host of events taking place across the islands this weekend and into next week.
The registration, safety briefing, and the acclimatisation swim took place today ahead of the one-day event tomorrow.
Will was joined in the studio on Friday by Dewi to find out more about this years Scilly Swim Challenge and the preparations ahead of the event.
Dewi said “We want to make sure all the swimmers are confortable, they understand we’ve got a lot of support out on the water and on land, and give them an understanding of how exactly the day pans out”. “The acclimatisation is very much a case of letting them get a feel for the water temperature, the clarity of the water, and actually more importantly for us on safety side, just to let them have an understanding of how the three separate swim pods go through the registration, and into and out of the water.”
The Competitors will set off tomorrow from Bar Point on St Mary’s and swim to St Martin’s before heading off to Tresco, Bryher, Samson and St Agnes before the final grueling Swim to Porthcressa Beach on St Mary’s. The two-day event is a series of smaller swims between the Islands.
Good luck to all taking part and you can hear Will’s pre-event interview with Dewi Winkle ahead of this year Scilly Swim Challenge bellow.
