Work has begun on demolishing the Old School at Carn Thomas and in the space of around a week they’ve made a lot of progress with the old science block being completely reduced to rubble.
The Wring Group, demolition, asbestos removal and environmental services are undertaking the project.
Will was joined on The Morning Show by Cllr Steve Sims to talk about the work that’s being done and what the long term plans are for the site.
Steve said “after quite a lot of consultation they were advised that de-risking it and knocking it down themselves would give them a much better chance of putting it up to tender. The best developer that comes forward will get the land with social housing tied in.”
Concerns have been raised about the work going on next to the school and the main road and Steve said “to my understanding they (Wring Group) are going to put a stop go system in place” and went onto say “part of there contract is to deal with transport isssues and I’m sure they will do it very effectively.”
When asked about the time frame for the demolition Steve said “they reckon it could be finished as early as Christmas but that’s dependent on weather conditions for transporting the rubble to the mainland. It's more than likely going to be the start of the new year but they’re making very good progress”.
