The fundraising dinner and auction on Saturday evening, at the Karma Hotel on St Martin's made £9,500 to go towards the new pavilion on Pool Green.
On top of the funds raised there were some other generous donations to go towards the new pavilion, and they are well on their way to reaching their target.
According to the Captain of the St Martin’s Cricket Club Tony Goddard they are looking to raising between £45,000 and £50,000. The current pavilion has been there since the 1950’s and has run its course.
A silent auction had been going on during the week to get the ball rolling and had already made a great start to the fundraising.
In attendance were English cricketers Matthew Hoggard MBE and James Tredwell. Both have had incredible careers for England with both of them making over 600 test caps for England. They gave memorable speeches after dinner, retelling some of their stories and sharing some of their career highlights.
They both arrived on St Martin’s during the day and were taken on a tour of the island including a trip down to Pool Green and see the cricket field and the current pavilion. When asked on his thoughts on the current pavilion James said “It’s quite basic in terms of what it offers but for a small island to have a cricket ground it’s fantastic.”
Matthew echoed James’s words and said “To be fair cricket is one those sports that is such a fantastic sport that anyone can play and everybody can get involved. There’s always something for somebody to do and to see a cricket pitch on an island that’s 2 miles long it’s fantastic." He went onto say “it still surprises me to come to a tiny island in the middle of the Scilly Isles to see a cricket pitch – I might be wanting to come back with the family.”
The top prizes included week long holidays to the Karma Reef Resort, Karma Kandara in Bali, signed Cricket memorabilia and tickets to see Rod Stewart at the O2 in London.
Alison Goddard who won the Karma Kandara holiday said “It’s been a brilliant evening really good fun, really interesting and it’s been heartening to see so many people bidding on such a lot of things." Alison was bidding on behalf on her son who lives in Surrey who was very interested in the Karma Kandara holiday and in constant contact with her by phone. Alison added “He's utterly thrilled.”
Towards the end of the evening Will spoke to Francesca McCarthy, the Regional Sales and Marketing Manager for Europe, and Scott Fisher, Front Office Manager and Events/Membership for Europe to get their thoughts on the evening.
Francesca said “It’s been absolutely fantastic, we had such a great turn out for this evening and we raised a lot of money for a good cause."
Scott added “It’s been a splendid evening, we would like to thank those who travelled across from the off islands and to everyone just for being so generous with donations and for showing a great amount of support for the cause.”
