Famous Guests
As you’re probably aware, our islands are a sub-tropical paradise. And as Scilly offers a taste of the Caribbean in English waters, we get quite a few famous people visiting our islands. Since 2007, these are some of the well-known people whom you’ve heard on Radio Scilly.
Possibly the most famous celebrity to visit has been David Beckham. He came to Scilly in October 2007 along with an entourage of 60, to film a commercial for Adidas. Radio Scilly was used to record a ‘fake’ interview for use in the advert. We were told that we were not allowed to discuss anything else but we ignored the heavies and produced a football which we asked David to sign to raise funds for the Adam Mallon Sports Appeal. David agreed. He seemed quite a nice bloke.
Martin Clunes is another nice chap. He called in to Radio Scilly during the filming of a documentary about islands. He revealed that he is honorary President of the gig club in Port Isaac, where they film his TV show ‘Doc Martin’. He was very interested in our studio set-up. Martin has a studio at his home in Dorset from which he does voiceovers for TV ads for clients like Tesco.
Aneka Rice is a well-known face on Bryher and in Scilly. Aneka fell in love wih the islands whilst filming her “Challenge Aneka’ programme in the 1990s. She helped the community build a new quay that became known as Anequay.
When the new quay was opened in 2009, Aneka came back to the islands. And she hosted a programme for Radio Scilly!
Former GMTV Presenter Ben Shephard came to run the Tresco marathon on 2 occasions and spoke with Craig
Lydia Birch caught up with Rolf Harris on his trip to Tresco.
Author Bill Bryson is a Tresco regular. Craig Dryden chatted to Bill during the Tresco Marathon.
